After leaving Hill's Cafe we headed up to the Continental where Jon Dee and James play every Wednesday night if they're not on the road.
First up was Jon Dee. He is back after being laid up for a couple of months due to some serious injuries from an auto accident. Jon Dee has played lead guitar in a number of bands, most notably Alejandro Escovedo's. Now he's playing his own material with a 4 piece band. Tonight on bass was Son Volt's touring bass player. On the other lead guitar was a guy I'm sure I've seen playing lead for Eliza Gilkyson. They played about an hour and Jon Dee plays power rock with some blues thrown in too.
James McMurtry followed Jon Dee. He did his usual good show. He's a sullen s.o.b. but plays great music. There were some fun moments tonight. During Choctaw Bingo a young woman decided to take up residence at the back of the stage, dancing up against a rail as if she were a stripper on a pole. When she turned around to face the audience I could see she knew every word to that song and believe me, there are a bunch of them. She got a little more daring and worked her was up to the front between James and the bass player. James noticed her and after checking her out, almost smiled. That's as good as it gets with him. Then she started dancing behind him and really getting pretty sexual. The crowd went crazy and James was enjoying it. It was wild!
A little while later one of the bartenders decided she needed to take a break and do a little dancing also. She took off the bar rag from her belt, off went her shoes and up she climbed on to one of the speakers at the front of the stage. This was just what we needed, a little extra excitement since we were up way past our bed time! James came on at 12:20am or so and played almost a full 2 hours. Cover charge was $7.
