Thursday morning began bright and early at Threadgill's. KGSR was doing live broadcasts from there with live music provided by ACL artists. We got there at 7:30am in time for David Garza. Each artist did 2 songs. David was followed by Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Reckless Kelly, Bob Schneider and Asleep at the Wheel. Wild, isn't it? All that live music before 10am!
Thursday evening Ian McLagan & the Bump Band did a free Happy Hour show downtown at Lucky Lounge. What a show! Probably 2 hours with a break. We're talking serious rocking! Ian was an original member of Small Faces and Faces. Yes, the same bands as Rod Stewart and Ronnie Lane. He also toured with the Rolling Stones in the mid-70's as their keyboard player. His Bump Band features Scrappy Jud Newcomb on lead guitar (great player, my favorite here in Austin), along with bass and drums. These boys rock! They play some old Faces stuff but this is not an artist relying on his past to make a living. Ian is still making great, original music. Some of it has a real Faces feel to it which gives the music a cool vibe. Soulful, funky, get up and dance music. He plays an old Wurlitzer organ and it has a great sound. His latest cd is called "Never Say Never." It's terrific! Patty Griffin does some guest vocals, the Tosca String Quartet is involved. I can't say enough about this live show. It used to be a regular weekly gig but now is more sporadic. Still...the fact that he will still play this small club at all and raise the roof is pretty darn neat.
