Ok, the holidays are over, cookies and candy finally gone, so it's time to settle back into a routine. We decided to get the new year off and running with a nice, intimate show at a place called Bethany Cafe (part of a church). They put on a monthly acoustic concert series featuring local and regional folk artists. Hadn't been there before but they have coffees and snacks, popcorn for 50 cents!
$10 got us in the door for BettySoo and Abi Tapia. The format for this show was a song swap, with both women doing some playing and harmonizing on each others songs.
This was my first time to see/hear Abi. And it may be my last for a while since this was her last local show because she is moving to Massachusetts, as in already packed. Much of Abi's writing seems to come from her everyday life experiences. She has a nice demeanor when performing, always smiling, dancing around and making eye contact with the audience. She leans toward the country side of folk and has a really smooth, soulful voice. It reminded me a bit of Carol Young of the Greencards. Listen for yourself at:

BettySoo played several new songs. She has a new record coming out, hopefully late spring or early summer. She is in the studio now (with Gurf Morlix producing!). It will be with a full band and the songs I have already heard live sound great. This is the second time in a month first timers came to the show with us and left as fans of hers.
She will be doing some upcoming shows opening for Eliza Gilkyson and Trout Fishing in America. You can always check out her music at:

They ended the show with a couple of classic covers. First BettySoo did Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" and then Abi played Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me." It was a great way to end the evening and I videoed both. You can view them at my youtube site.
